This will be my last blog in 2021, and the year is ending as it began, with the Covid pandemic once again causing real concern. The omicron variant is spreading incredibly fast, and the government this week asked MPs to vote on new restrictions which it is hoped will slow down the alarming rise in case numbers.
I know the regulations, to reintroduce face masks in public places, to require the presentation of a negative lateral flow test result (or a certificate demonstrating that you’ve received two doses of the vaccine) to enter certain venues, and to require NHS staff have the vaccination by April, have been controversial. But I am in no doubt that it is right to do all we can to protect ourselves, each other, and the NHS, and I was glad to vote for them.
But without Labour votes, these new regulations would not have passed, as many Conservative MPs voted against them. I am aghast at their total lack of responsibility. The rebellion demonstrates just how weak Boris Johnson has become, as so many of his own MPs defied his instruction to vote in favour of the new requirements.
In much more cheerful news, I was delighted to visit Moss Park Junior School today, to present 7-year-old Lily, who is the winner of my annual Christmas card competition, with her prize and certificate. I’m very grateful to the hundreds of children who entered the competition this year, and once again to Wain Estates, both for their sponsorship and for helping with the judging. A very special thank you to Lily for designing such a beautiful card. It is a great way for me to wish a very merry Christmas to all my constituents who are celebrating, and a happy new year to you all!
